THIS MONTH'S FEATURED ARTIST

Robert Lenz

Having grown up in the Chicago area, Bob began drawing and painting while in high school in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He occupied his free time on weekends and summers by entering local sidewalk and storefront art shows. Buoyed by these early experiences, he went on to study Fine Art at the University of Illinois. To help pay for his college tuition he played the drums in several small bands on and off campus.

During the last year of his college curriculum, he took a course named  “Advertising Design”. So inspired by this advertising course, he left Illinois after graduation, to start a job as an assistant art director at one of the largest Ad Agencies in New York City, McCann Erickson. At McCann, he climbed the typical ladder of success and by 1977 he was Creative Director of the New York Office. While there, he created the famous and successful sunset, “Miller Time” campaign for Miller High Life Beer and the even more popular “Tastes Great—Less Filling” campaign for Miller Lite, which ran for 20 years and established the Light Beer category in the U.S. It has been voted to be the 8th best campaign in Advertising history.

Eventually he picked up the paintbrush again…and a new career was in the making. Realizing his passion for art was still there, he began taking courses again…to catch up. After a 38-year hiatus he studied at the Art Students League, The National Academy, and the Silvermine Art Center. Finally, he found his way to the Washington Art Association in Washington, Connecticut.

Showing and painting, and printing, and now, teaching, Bob has established himself as a widely known and respected representational artist in both Connecticut and New York.

“I feel extremely fortunate to have had 2 exciting, creative careers…. the second one only now getting into gear. I can’t wait to wake up each morning to get out to the studio and start painting.”

Bob and his wife of many years live in Kent and New York City. They have a daughter and son who have 2 children apiece and happily live in New York City as well.
