A much-anticipated Cornwall tradition celebrating its 60th year, The Rose Algrant Show will exhibit the work of well known and well on their way artists the weekend of August 9 – 11.
In 1959, colorful Rose Algrant offered to model for a small group of her local painter friends (including James Thurber and Marc Simont). Delighted with the results, she then suggested a show of only her portraits. The coterie instead decided to also showcase the many wonderful pieces in her collection, and a beloved community event was born. Or something like that! Please see the attached Cornwall Chronicle article, Who Was Rose Algrant? for more on the Show’s origin story.
Over the years, the creative circle of friends has flourished from the original nine to now more than fifty artists living in Cornwall. On view will be drawings, paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, linens and photography just to name a few.
The exhibition will be held in Community Hall at the Trinity Retreat Center along the Housatonic River with the opening party – a summer highlight – kicking off the arts celebration on Friday, August 9, from 5pm to 8 pm. The show continues on Saturday, August 10 from 10am-5pm and Sunday 10am-noon. Proceeds benefit artists and 15% of sales will be donated to the Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department.
“The Rose Algrant show has been a marvelous feature of Cornwall summers for as long as I can remember. Cornwall is fortunate to have a large number of terrific artists, many of them well known, and the show is a great place to discover what they are doing. It is also an excellent place to find a wide variety of artworks, many of them, even if by established artists, reasonably priced.” – resident and exhibitor, Phyllis Nauts.
