Called ‘The Tenth Muse’ and ‘Mexican Phoenix,’ the nun Sor Juana Inés De la Cruz is considered one of the finest poets of the Spanish New World Golden Age. She was also a philosopher, scholar and composer. Her life will be depicted through music, artwork and poetry readings of her own writings.
Listen to a live performance by Ensemble “El Fuego” of one of the works: Aladas Jerarquías (Winged hierarchies) by Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco (1644-1728), Perú Crescendo collaborates with “El Fuego,” an early music ensemble from North Carolina, in a program designed by their Artistic Director, Salomé Sandoval. The program features a selection of sacred and secular cantatas from the 1600s New World Colonies (mainly Mexico, Peru and Guatemala), with vocal compositions by Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, Manuel de Zumaya, Juan Padilla, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and other contemporaries. The works are by Baroque composers from, and are meant to underline aspects of the life of the controversial nun. The program also includes narrations of Sor Juana’s life story, and excerpts of her poetry, as well as images and paintings of her times.
One might think that South American Baroque music is something exotic, as we are often hearing recently rediscovered music that hasn’t been performed in our concert halls. But this music is not new to modern ears, as in many Latin American countries, and specially in Bolivia, musicians have been playing this repertoire without interruption since the colonial times, much like European choral societies are performing the Messiah yearly. The Baroque is a truly global art movement, and the story of Baroque music in South America is proof of that.
Performers are the Crescendo Vocal Ensemble, Salomé Sandoval, soprano, baroque guitar and archlute, Malina Rauschenfels, soprano, Baroque violin and violoncello, Roman Testroet, tenor, Tricia van Oers, recorder, Hideki Yamaya, Baroque guitar and theorbo, and Christine Gevert, harpsichord, organ and direction.
