Charles H. Hollinger, Canterbury Fine Arts faculty and artist who specializes in plein air painting, is currently on display in the Edward J. Duffy Art Gallery. A self-described avid outdoorsman and nature lover, Charles’ artistic expertise is reflected in his work through sweeping landscapes, his canvases dotted by greens of all shades with bursts of sunlight appearing to ascend organically from within the otherwise static piece. “I try to bring forth my understanding and, more importantly, my love of light and my awe of the natural world through the relationship of warm versus cool colors, light versus shadow, and contrasting shapes,” Hollinger notes of his work. “I try to portray an intimate feeling of place, as if you had just stumbled onto an undiscovered location. ”
Charles completed his undergraduate degree at St. Lawrence University, NY, in political science and fine arts. He received his Masters in Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from Western Connecticut State University, CT. He paints in oils on canvas and board with smooth brush strokes, using atmospheric perspective and muted colors to draw viewers into a motionless and tranquil landscape. Recently, he expanded his artistic exploration to works with graphite, charcoal, and wax medium on paper. “The process is less about the subject matter at hand but more about bringing my understanding of surface in painting to the drawing medium,” he reflects.
The show is open to the viewing public through April 19, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 am -3 pm or by appointment.
